Recruiting Video

Recently on Facebook I saw people talking about making a recruiting video for Soldiers of God. I thought that it was a good idea and decided that it would be more beneficial for everyone (FatesSoldier) if we discussed this on the forums, as some of us (FatesSoldier) might not have a Facebook account.
Some of the ideas for the videp that were mentioned are that we record some of us playing the games we play most often, take somes screenshots of matches, and have everyone send in a picture of their Spartan.

I've had a fair amount of experience with video editing, and filming for college. So if you guys would like my help I'm interested. I'd just need to know what you would like to have filmed and how you would like the film to look.

First of SKILLET OWNS!..I love skillet!..well i play alot of Gears..(as u guys know)..So if i could get a clip of me playing gears3..that would be sweeeeeet!..not like a clip..but like a mini clip..and a pic..or whatever..

Okay I'll start a list of games to get footage of:

Gears 3
Halo: Reach
CoD: Black Ops
NCAA 12


Let me know what other games to add.

(Edit: Added Halo:Reach and CoD: Black Ops. Does anyone still play MW2? Or any of the Battlefield games?)

yea i say those 3 are the main games right now..that everyone plays..(not including the sports games of course)..what u guys think?

I play Space Marine. Hey V3ctor how do you make video game videos, Do I need a certain device or software to make it?

It depends on your budget haha. I personally use a Kodak ZI8 Flip Camera on a tri-pod. It records in 1080p HD, and is currently the best I can do. It tends to offer decent quality, however lighting is an issue. It sometimes causes the screen to glare on the lens and makes the video less professional. However I do not currently have the funds to buy a high-end capture card. Typically these devices provide the best video recording experience. However, they have to be installed into your computer, which you then hook your Xbox into. Capture cards are by far the best way to capture console footage presently, however you need money and a desk top computer. Both of which I lack right now. I only have my macbook here at college, haha.

I think another game that could be added is NCAA 12. Also what I've done to capture video is plug my xbox into my tv, then have that output to my recordable dvd player' sure it only records at standard definition, but I don't have to worry about lighting.

That's a solid method for recording too. I'll also add NCAA 12 to the above list.

I feel this post is directed towards me for some reason. I could just be paranoid though.

But yeah that would be pretty cool to get some recordings of the clan playing different games. Recording NCAA 12 might be a little tricky though seeing as you can only have two people in a game.

yea i agree with fate..ncaa 12 will be kinda hard..don't know about that game..but i like the other choices..when we going to start the recording?..

if there is any way possible to put maybe an up comming game like MW3 in there. i feel like a large majority of the clan will be playing it.

That's a good point nichols. I can probably find some gameplay footage from trailers and the like if you guys want to add Battlefield 3 and/or CoD MW 3 footage. Your choice.

I hear you guys are working on a promo of sorts, here's a couple of things ive learned on the way for some of our videos. (Which you can see in this playlist, some are from the xbox, others are pc)

For one, make your video represent what you guys do as well as the games you guys play (at least, thats what my philosophy has always been, but thats your call ultimately). So for most of our videos, we generally are rather silly and lighthearted about what we do, so the way i edit them tends to reflect a time of having fun doing silly stuff (unless otherwise noted). Using trailer footage isnt a bad idea, though its not the most original idea out there (but hey, it works!)


As far as recording goes, i would strongly recommend a capture card, albeit they are kinda expensive, the quality you get will greatly help with making a good presentation. I personally own a Blackmagic Intensity Pro (the PCIe version) for my recording work (you can see the playlist link up there). Or as DragonTamer said, record to a dvd and then export that footage to your computer to edit (you would get better quality, though in SD, than by recording via an external camera).

For editing, I would use what's most comfortable to you, I use Sony Vegas Pro 10 for my work (gaming or non-gaming related), and there are plenty of other good programs out there (Premiere, Final Cut, Avid, iMovie, Windows Movie Maker, etc.), some more powerful than others.

I think we might want to think about putting both games in there.

thanks for that info brown!..very good stuff..also yea vector..prolly the most popular games coming out..like gears 3, mw3,bf3..etc..so then we wait till nov to start the recording?..or can we start it when gears 3 hits?..

It's your guys' call. If you would like to wait, that's okay with me. In fact it might be easier too. I have a lot I'm already dealing with at school, so if you all wanted to wait on the video it would certainly help me.

Who do we send our photos and videos and how do I send it to them.

You can send them to me as an email attachment. The best email to reach me at is hoover_k@students.lynchburg.edu. That way I can save your video files to a server here on campus that I can access later from an edit bay.
